Through the Wood

A strategic tabletop game about finding your way into the woods.

Over the river and through the wood,
or so the story goes.

Work together through the wilderness and find local fiction through fateful encounters.
But your caravan only comes packed for three days — take to the thicket's center or be made into another myth.
Roll the die and turn the map over
with each move;
who knows what, or who, lies in the wilderness.

Contents include: 30 path markers, 12 figures, 9 tools, 1 set of die, and the game manual.
Through the Wood's paper standees
were illustrated and precisely cut by hand, then mounted on a wire frame.

Each character's portrait is made up of layered cardstock glued together, creating dynamic silhouettes.
Developed in Game Maker Studio,
Through the Wood's digital release is set for 2025.

Everything from rendering light sources on normal maps through GSL and JavaScript to frame-by-frame pixel animations are made in engine.
Reference sheet for the playable character, showcasing the key and inbetween frames that emphasize the elasticity of their motions.
Mosaic foreground and background built from tilesets; a particle system with a custom animation was created to simulate rain.
State machines make each object react on point each time a state is called, and shaders have been made to create visual effects like the characters' shadows and the swaying grass.
