This Means This, This Means That

A multimedia cover for Sean Hall's textbook on semiotics.

Presence: its how we interpret the world around us.

Semiotics shows us that we understand presence through positive and negative space, color, tonality, and other signifiers.

This book cover applies these core concepts through iconography.

Each symbol can be broken down
into two parts: physical gesture
versus a visual
metonym.
Take for example the horse: its reins are illustrated by a person running, and the complete silhouette are that of a racing horse — distance and speed infers presence.

Showing presence through relation makes the cover thematically
clear for any reader —
Light and shadow imply position,
and creating each symbol with colored acrylic makes the presentation tactile and there.

A mockup showing presence through inference; its implied the matryoshka doll inside this one has the second half of the title printed on. However, without prior knowledge of Sean Hall's work, this study doesn't work in isolation.
